Guidelines

THE BASIC SAFETY GUIDELINES ON HANDLING HORSES

  • When approaching the horse, it is recommended to go from the side and let the horse know of your presence.
  • Leave plenty of room when walking round the back of a horse to avoid getting hurt from a sudden kick from behind.
  • Avoid making loud unnecessary noises or sudden movements when around horses.
  • Do not compromise safety by wrapping the rope or reins around your hand — avoiding the risk of being dragged.
  • When wearing loose clothing, make sure to have it buttoned, tucked, or zipped up to avoid it from causing a distraction to the horse.
  • Before riding a horse, make sure to remove the jewelries and other accessories that can get tangled or caught in the hooks, straps, buckles, etc. that are attached to the horse’s body.
  • If the horse is not cooperative and is starting to misbehave, let the instructor know about it.

THE BASIC SAFETY & PROPER ETIQUETTE FOR RIDING HORSES

  • Always pay close attention to the instructions of the trainer and how the horse behaves, for safety reasons.
  • Do not forget to wear safety equipment, especially the helmet. Make sure that it is strapped properly and fits comfortably.
  • Maintain a safe distance from other horseback riders/students to avoid getting kicked by their horse.
  • Horses can get distracted and startled by any sudden movements, which is why ensuring that everything that is on the horse should be securely tied is one of the main priorities.
  • Remember to always become self-aware or have a presence of mind while riding a horse. Having good manners and respect towards horses and other students is a must.
